The Art of Living in the Present

📷

Many people embark on a journey seeking happiness, not knowing that true happiness simply means living in the present. It is ironical that I am writing about this as I am a vivid example of a person who is constantly thinking about my goals and plans for the future. I am so restless that while I am engaged in an activity, I will be thinking of the next project to work on. Living in the present is a great challenge for me and till today, I am still trying my best to enjoy the moment and savour what life has to offer.

A lot of people spend their entire lives battling with anxiety that they have missed out so many wonderful opportunities due to debilitating fear. Our mind is a cluttered and noisy place. We often get affected by thoughts of a tragic past or an anticipated future. We worry about things which are unimportant, non consequential and trivial. We allow negative emotions and frivolous thoughts to clutter our minds.

The secret of being physically, emotionally and mentally healthy is to treasure the present moment and live life to the fullest instead of mourning over the past or worrying about things which have not even happened. Being contented with oneself and treasuring the present is the key to true happiness. Many people think a better job, a more luxurious house and a bigger car will bring them happiness, not knowing that happiness means focusing on the now, not the past and the future. If tomorrow is your last day on earth, would having another designer bag be important? Obviously NO. You would want to spend time with your family and people who are important to you and treasure your last moments with them.

Here are some tips to live in the present:

Remove clutter from your life.

Prioritise and do things which are important. Eradicate meaningless tasks such as entertaining people that you do not like. Remove possessions that are not needed. Physical clutter turns to mind clutter, therefore when you remove everything which is not required you will feel relaxed and free.

Appreciate the simple things in life.

The simple things in life make people happy. Focus on things which make you happy such as relishing your favourite dessert, listening to your favourite song and spending time with people you love.

Eliminate negative thoughts

Do not allow superficial things such as the weather or annoying people to affect you. You are the master of your own emotions. Stay away from negative people as they will drain you. Once you have positive thoughts, good things will come your way.

Smile

Look in the mirror and smile to yourself. The more you smile, the happier you will feel. Our expression communicates our inner thoughts, emotions and state of mind. When you smile, you also make people around you happy.

Perform Acts of Kindness

Every act of kindness will bring a smile to those in need. You can volunteer your services to a charitable organisation or donate your old clothes to the underprivileged. Giving your seat to a pregnant woman or offering to help an elderly person to carry groceries are some ways in which you can make a difference to someone’s life. Do things for people without expecting something in return.

Forgive and Forget

Do not harbour resentment towards anyone as this only makes you miserable. Forgive and forget. It’s no point getting upset with things or incidents that are already over.

Remove addictions

Alcohol, cigarettes and drugs are addictions and prevent you from having a free life. If you are suffering from any kind of addiction, get help immediately.

Do not worry

Worrying takes a toll on your body. The more time you spend worrying about the future, the less time you will have to enjoy the present. Spending time worrying about something that has not happened will rob you of experiencing the beautiful moments now.

Embrace the outdoors

Take time to appreciate nature and the outdoors. Unwind at the park, beach or anywhere that is tranquil and peaceful. Allow yourself to immerse in the serene surroundings.

Living in the present is the key to a happy and fulfilling life. Living happily means savouring all the lovely moments with the people that matter in your life.
