I am an avid fan of ramen. Therefore, you can imagine how elated I was at the launch of the famed Afuri Ramen 阿夫利 at the revamped Funan Mall on 28 June this year. Afuri Ramen first opened in Ebisu Tokyo in 2003. Since then, the humble ramen restaurant has expanded to 15 outlets all over the world.
Afuri 阿夫利 is renowned for its light, refreshing chicken broth with hints of citrusy yuzu. With ingredients such as yuzu, chicken broth, dashi (fish broth) and charcoal-grilled pork, it is gratifying to the palate and comforting to the senses.
Named after Mount Afuri in Kanagawa, the ramen in the restaurant is prepared using water from their wells. What I like about the broth is that it is prepared using natural ingredients and does not contain MSG.
The signature Yuzu Shio Ramen has a fresh, clean taste which is absolutely divine. The ramen texture is al dente with a firm bite. A tantalising combination of sweet and savoury flavours, the broth offers a refreshing twist from the usual robust pork-based ramen.
I personally like the Yuzu Tsukemen which is the perfect summer dish. The broth is full bodied with the sweet, delicate essence of yuzu while the ramen has a chewy texture which goes exceedingly well with the rich broth.
If you are not inclined towards Yuzu dishes, you can try the Tonkotsu Tan Tan Ramen S($15.90, Tonkotsu Shio Ramen (S$13.90) or rice bowls such as Kakuni Cha Shu Don (S$9.80) and Tan Tan Don (S$7.80). Delectable side dishes include Afuri Buta Wing Gyoza ( S$6.90 for 6 pieces), Aburi Cha Shu (S$3 per slice), Crispy Gyoza (S$5.90 for 4 pieces) and Fried Chicken (S$6.90 for 4 pieces).
Overall, Afuri Ramen 阿夫利 is a great place to enjoy tasty ramen in a convivial, relaxed setting. The menu may not be extensive, however, there is enough variety to cater to different palates.
